Course Description:
Downhill Skiing and Snowboarding Courses for PE credit

Greek Peak Mountain Resort offers package deals for the beginner skier and boarder all the way to students with expert ability. You'll have fun while learning or improving . . . and get P.E. credit at the same time. The course runs for seven (7) consecutive weeks on Monday evening. It is important that your schedule permits attendance on this night throughout the season.

Transportation, instruction, ski-lift fees, and skiing time are offered in a package deal. An informational brochure with the course syllabus is available at Physical Education department in PALS Office.

Course Payment: The course will be invoiced to your college account.

Student Responsibility: All students who sign up for this course are responsible for checking their University e-mail for messages. Communications like class cancellations will be posted here. Please check for your messages the day before and the day of your class.

When is the program: The course runs for seven (7) consecutive weeks on Monday evenings beginning January 28, 2008(1/28,2/4,11,18,25,3/3,17). It is important that your schedule permits attendance on this night throughout the season.

Transportation: The bus will leave promptly at 4:15 pm from the Phillips Hall. Please be on time. The transportation is only for students who have paid the bus fee at the time of course registration.
Lessons: When you arrive at Greek Peak, you will be met by a college representative in the Katalima who will take attendance and give out lift tickets and a rental vouchers if needed. If you do not ride the bus, you will pick up your lift ticket and rental voucher (if needed) at the Ticket Booth.

The day of your lesson the lift ticket and rental voucher are good from the time we open at 9:30 am until closing at 9 pm. The lesson time is 5:30 p.m. for 1 hour. All skiers and boarders should be at the Lesson Meeting Spot located next to the Alpha Slope (beginners chair) by 5:20 pm for attendance line-up.

Clothing: Be sure to dress warmly. Outer clothing should be windproof and snow shedding. It is better to over dress and shed additional layers than to lack the appropriate clothing.

Attendance Policy:
When you arrive at Greek Peak, attendance will be taken. Failure to sign in will result in you being marked absent from your lessons, which WILL AFFECT YOUR GRADE.

Make-Up Policy: The following make-up policy will be strictly adhered to:
1) You have seven opportunities to take SIX classes.
The make-up date is Monday, March 17, 2008. Transportation is provided.
Additional make-up opportunities (w/o transportation) must be arranged through george@greekpeak.net.

Refund Policy: All rebates will be issued in the form of tickets for lifts or rentals for the dollar equivalent of the unused services less a $5.00 processing fee. Transportation fees cannot be refunded. All requests for refunds must be made by March 1, 2008 in writing to:

The following is a course curriculum for Downhill Skiing and Snowboarding:

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Open to all skill levels, either for credit or non-credit PE.

SKI COURSE CURRICULUM BEGINNER

1st Week
1. Familiarization with the equipment
2. Introduce skier to responsibility code
3. Sliding on slight incline
4. Introduce to stopping and turning both directions
5. Use of the beginner area surface lift

2nd Week
1. Review first week information
2. Introduce to riding and getting off the chair lift
3. Experiment with controlling turn shape and speed control

3rd Week
1. Review fundamentals
2. Work on emergency stopping
3. Continue experimentation with turn shape and speed control on beginner terrain
4. When ready move on to an intermediate terrain

4th Week
1. Review
2. Work on the three basic skiing movements (edging, rotary, pressure)
3. Play with the terrain to accent these movements

5th Week
1. Review previous information
2. How to increase and decrease speed efficiently
3. Keeping movements smooth and continuous
4. Explore more terrain

6th Week
1. Review
2. Evaluate skill development at this point and work on weaknesses in a fun, safe and appropriate environment


SKI COURSE CURRICULUM INTERMEDIATE

1st Week
1. Review fundamentals
2. Review Skier Responsibilities Code
3. Explore available terrain

2nd Week
1. Work on side-slipping
2. Discuss equipment maintenance
3. Work on the three basic skiing movements

3rd Week
1. Work on efficient, smooth, continuous movements
2. Play with turn shapes

4th Week
1. Introduction to moguls and varied terrain and conditions

5th Week
1. Introduction to gates and more efficient carving

6th Week
1. Introduction to games and exercises that keep you progressing at the advanced levels


SKI COURSE CURRICULUM ADVANCED
Weeks 1-6
Work on using the ski as a tool(carving), mogul skiing, racing, varied snow conditions, short radius turns and expert terrain.


SKI COURSE CURRICULUM EXPERT
Weeks 1-6
Learn how to challenge yourself to keep your skiing skills sharp, improve your mogul skiing, racing, short turns, steep terrain skiing and anything else you want to work on


SNOWBOARD COURSE CURRICULUM BEGINNER

1st Week
1. Familiarization with the equipment
2. Introduce boarder to responsibility code
3. Introduction to mobility with board on flats
4. Introduction to sliding on slight incline
5. Introduction to turning both directions (heel side, toe side) and stopping

NOTE: 1st Time is very physical. It will involve a lot of hiking.

2nd Week
1. Review first week information
2. Introduction to riding and getting off the chair lift
3. Experiment with controlling turn shape and speed control

3rd Week
1. Review fundamentals
2. Continue experimentation with turn shape and speed control
3. Work on emergency stopping
4. When ready, move on to intermediate terrain

4th Week
1. Review
2. Work on better edging movements
3. Play with the terrain

5th Week
1. Review previous information
2. How to increase and decrease speed efficiently
3. Keeping movements smooth and continuous
4. Explore more terrain

6th Week
1. Review
2. Evaluate skill development at this point and work on weaknesses in a fun, safe and appropriate environment
